When we get standard military boots, it seems the army doesn’t think about the comfort of soldiers. Fortunately, there are steps we can make combat boots comfortable. Here are five different tips and tricks to keep your feet happy.
1. Wear cushioned socks
There are many manufacturers today that make cushioned socks, but instead of buying cheap socks from your local department store, consider some higher-priced socks. Not only do they work better in providing comfort and moisture absorption, but they also last longer, making up for the extra cost.
2. Use insoles or inserts
Although some boots come with cushioning insoles, they rarely fully adapt to your foot type, and even if they do, they lose their cushioning over time. Gelatin is usually the best choice because it helps relieve pressure on the feet. And, if your boots are a little too big for your feet, these insoles may fill in some of the extra space and provide a more snug feel.
3. Wear for an hour at a time and gradually break in
Instead of wearing your new boots all day in the woods or on patrol, start by wearing them for an hour a day for a week or two. This way, they will gradually adapt to the size and shape of your feet and even the way you walk. This reduces the pain and discomfort that can be experienced and prevents blisters, especially for those who need to wear work boots for up to 12 to 14 hours a day.
4. Care for leather
Finally, invest in some ggood care solution to help care for your boots. This prevents the leather from becoming stiff over time, which can affect comfort. Stiff boots tend to “pinch” toes or ankles, causing blisters.
5. Invest a shoe brace
You can find shoe braces at almost any store that sells leather shoes and footwear supplies, and if you are in the military, you may be able to find some on base. Simply place them into the boot and adjust to create tension on the leather. Basically, while they don’t really stretch the leather, they will help prevent shrinkage when you’re not wearing them.
Since each foot is unique, when you buy military boots, you can expect them to take some time to adjust to your foot type. Run them in gently, make sure to give them enough maintenance, and use a shoe brace if it feels a little tight. That way, you’ll be able to make combat boots comfortable.
